14. What is efflorescence and how can it be removed ? |
| |
The phenomenon of cement humification- the deposit of surface salts is a natural temporary phenomenon, which appears either as a white dust or as a discoloration.
The water soluble calcium salts are washed over the stone surface and reacting with carbon dioxide produce calcium carbonate. This happens sometimes when the concrete of the stone is being wet releasing water which stays on the surface.
Other than the visual effect there are no other harmful repercussions. It is a common event in all high quality materials with high cement content.
The deposited salts can be removed with the application of a light mix of hydrochloric acid (5%) or certain chemical mixes.
If the salts remain after the application then more time is needed in order to be removed under normal weather conditions. |
